چکیده

We examine the different ways of writing a cover of curves φ : C → D over a field K as a composition φ = φn ◦ φn−1 ◦ · · · ◦ φ1, where each φi is a cover of curves over K of degree at least 2 which cannot be written as the composition of two lower-degree covers. We show that if the monodromy group Mon(φ) has a transitive abelian subgroup then the sequence (deg φi)1≤i≤n is uniquely determined up to permutation by φ, so in particular the length n is uniquely determined. We prove analogous conclusions for the sequences (Mon(φi))1≤i≤n and (Aut(φi))1≤i≤n. Such a transitive abelian subgroup exists in particular when φ is tamely and totally ramified over some point in D(K), and also when φ is a morphism of one-dimensional algebraic groups (or a coordinate projection of such a morphism). Thus, for example, our results apply to decompositions of polynomials of degree not divisible by char(K), additive polynomials, elliptic curve isogenies, and Lattès

Combinatorial Constructions for Transitive Factorizations in the Symmetric Group

We consider the problem of counting transitive factorizations of permutations; that is, we study tuples (σr , . . . , σ1) of permutations on {1, . . . , n} such that (1) the product σr · · · σ1 is equal to a given target permutation π , and (2) the group generated by the factors σi acts transitively on {1, . . . , n}. This problem is widely known as the Hurwitz Enumeration Problem, since an enc...

Quantitative analysis of thermo-mechanical behavior in 414 stainless steel using flow curves and processing maps

The hot deformation behavior of a typical martensitic stainless steel containing 2.1% Ni was investigated by means of the compression test in the strain rate range of 0.001-1 s-1 and temperature range of 950-1150 °C. The flow behavior of the steel was evaluated using the flow stress curves and flow softening map and by microstructural investigation. Taking into account of the strain effect on t...

The Higgs Factorization of a Geometric Strong

The Higgs faotopization of a strong map between matroids on a fixed set is that factorization into elementary naps in which each matroid is the Higgs lift of its successor. This factorization is characterized by properties of the modular filters which induce the elementary maps of the factorizations in two different ways. It is also sho~m to be minimal in a natural order on factorizations arisi...

New invariants for surfaces

We define a new invariant of surfaces, stable on connected components of moduli spaces of surfaces. The new invariant comes from the polycyclic structure of the fundamental group of the complement of a branch curve. We compute this invariant for a few examples. Braid monodromy factorizations related to curves is a first step in computing the fundamental group of the complement of the curve, and...

Noncommutative polynomial maps

Polynomial maps attached to polynomials of an Ore extension are naturally defined. In this setting we show the importance of pseudo-linear transformations and give some applications. In particular, factorizations of polynomials in an Ore extension over a finite field Fq[t; θ], where θ is the Frobenius automorphism, are translated into factorizations in the usual polynomial ring Fq[x].
